Content Aware Scale is found in photoshop CS4and CS5. You can use it on a particular kind of image to increase the background without distorting figures in it. It is very simple to do.
Look at this free stock image. The background at the sides are not much. It would have looked better if more of the water could be seen. This is where you turn to Content Aware Scale.
The same image with the Content Aware Scale applied. Look at the expanse of water now. The couple in the middle is exactly the same. No distortion has occurred.
